Elis Give Crippled Squash Varsity 1st Loss, Gain Tie for Title; '55 Wins

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

An underdog squash team gained a tie for the Intercollegiate League championship Saturday at New Haven by trouncing the previously undefeated Crimson, 6 to 3.

Charlie Ufford, the Crimson's number one man, easily trimmed Blair Murphy of the Elis, but only Captain Jim Bacon at two, and Mike Ward at nine, were also able to win.

As Coach Jack Barnaby had feared, it was the illness of two Harvard regulars that was mainly responsible for the loss, the Crimson's first in nine league games this season. "When we lost Watts and Mugaseth, our usual number two and four men in the last week that meant everybody on the team had to move up two notches from their usual positions," Barnaby said, "but I'm still proud of the way we played."

Most of the matches at the lower spots were extremely close, and Dave Symmes and Larry Brownell both went to five games before losing.

Freshmen Win, 5 to 4

The Crimson freshmen barely edged the Elis Saturday, 5 to 4, winning four of the top five matches, and the number nine contest to clinch the victory. Guy Paschal, Bill Wister, Bob Brown, Bats Wheeler, and Al Heagler were Yardling winners.
