Eli Nine Stops Late Yardling Rally to Win, 8-7, with Davis

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Freshman shortstop Paul Murphy hit two long triples yesterday afternoon at New Haven, but it was Yale's pitcher, Bob Davis, who stole the show. Davis struck out two pinch hitters in a row to stop a ninth inning Crimson rally and give the Elis a well-earned 8 to 7 victory, and the Big Three crown.

A three run Yale seventh inning off reliefer Hank Hamel put the Yardlings behind 8 to 3 going into the final frame. Pinch hitter Paul Bivona, leading off, was hit by a pitched ball. Ted Cooney forced Bivona at second and Cooney went to third on Jimmy Rahal's second single. Cooney scored when Bill Chauncey's grounder was booted.

Murphy Triples

With men on first and second Murphy hit his second triple of the day, a long drive to left field. Murphy scored when captain George MacDonald singled to left. MacDonald moved to second on Dick Hoffman's single. Davis bore down at this point to strike out pinch hitters Ross Shepherd and Jerry Schocker to end the game.

Early Eli Lead

Yale jumped off to a two run first inning lead when Andy Ward walked the first three batters he faced and Eli captain Phil Mathias hit a hump back single.

The Crimson went ahead in the third. With two outs and Ward on third. Rahal singled, with Ward scoring when the throw to third went wild. Rahal going to second. He scored a moment later on a passed ball and an error by the catcher. Chauncey walked and scored when Murphy hit a long triple to left center.

The freshmen play their last game this Saturday against a Tabor Academy nine.
