The Yale juniors are offered their choice between the study of Botany or of Anglo-Saxon as "optionals." This year it being found that a majority of the class preferred Botany, and it being impossible to accommodate all who wished to fake the study, the faculty devised the brilliant expedient of assigning men to either course by lot. The method of drawing the names from a hat, the faculty thought, was calculated to select men with particular reference to their ability and thirst for knowledge in either department. Strange to say, it is claimed that the elective system is not a success at Yale!
