The practice of the first and second elevens yesterday afternoon was not very encouraging, During the last few minutes, to be sure, the first eleven seemed to wake up and settle down to real work, but during the greater part of the time the play was slow and spiritless. There was a great deal of fumbling and some very poor tackling. Harding played a good game for the second eleven at quarterback; he did the only really effective tackling of the whole game. Sherwin also played well; he made the prettiest rush of the afternoon, getting past all the men on the 'varsity side and only being stopped finally by the combined efforts of four men. The centre of the 'varsity line opened up big holes in the second eleven's line through which Lake made great gains. Mason was the only other man in either line who did especially good work. He is very quick and active, and follows the ball closely. Upton did not play on account of a lame ankle. The teams were made up as follows:
'Varsity-Rushers, Cumnock, Blanchard, Finlay, Cranston, P. Trafford, Newell '94, Hallowell; quarter-back, Dean; half-backs, Lake and Corbett; full-back, Trafford.
Second Eleven-Rushers, Mason, Davis, Shea, Bangs, Shaw, Newell '92, Blagden and Crosby; quarter-back, Harding; half-backs, Sherwin, Lee and Fearing; full-back, Frothingham.
The elevens were coached by J. H. Sears '89, and George Adams '84. Saxe, L. S., acted as referee.
