Captain McClung won the toss. He chose to take the ball, giving Harvard the north end of the field.

The Yale players bunched together and formed the V, with little Barbour at the head. Ten yards in front of them stood the Harvard team, waiting on tip-toe for the ball to be put in play. Capt. McClung gave one more look over his men and then signalled Barbour to start the play. He passed the ball to big Sanford, who tucked it under his arm, and the closely locked Yale wedge started with a rush into Harvard's territory. It gained the five yards to the middle of the field and then began to break up. Emmons, Harvard's left end, darted in the side and got a good grip on Heffelfinger, who fell in the midst of the struggling mass of players. Yale's first play was over and she had but two yards to her credit.

McCormick made a dash at Harvard's centre, but Dexter fell on him, and it was Yale's second down. Then came the first of McClung's brilliant rushes. Hinkey, Winter, Heffelfinger and the rest of the backs formed into a crescent in front of their captain, and the scythe-like formation rolled out around the left end. Hallowell and the other rushers were blocked off and McClung sprinted along the side till he reached Harvard's 20-yard line. It was an exhibition of beautiful interference.

The ball was nearing the crimson goal and Harvard grew anxious. Heffelfinger tried to go through the center, but Mackie stopped him. Then Winter bucked through for a gain and McCormick made a dash between Hartwell and Wallis.

Yale's Quick Touchdown.Yale had the ball only two yards from Harvard's goal. Stanley Morison was called back of the line to run with the ball. Down went his head for the Harvard center and the touchdown was made. Yale's beautiful play had won them a score in just three and one-half minutes after the game began. No goal 4 to 0.

Harvard started off the play from the twenty-five yard line. Lake was put behind the V and got five yards toward the left. Then Corbett tried to find a hole between Hallowell and Newell. He got through for two yards and then Winter's grip enveloped him. Emmons did some clever blocking off, and Lake got around his end for eight yards.

A Kicking Game.It was Harvard's first down; but Trafford began the kicking game by punting to Bliss. Hallowell followed the ball well and downed Bliss in his tracks on the Yale 35-yard line.

Heffelfinger made a little hole which Bliss squeezed through for a slight gain. Then Winter essayed to get through Dexter and McClung around Hallowell's end. Both were vain attempts and it was Yale's third down and five yards to gain. Bliss fell back and sent a low punt to Corbett who made the fair catch on Harvard's 36-yard line.

Harvard formed a wedge and Lake got five yards behind it. Wallis tackled him and in so doing bruised his lame leg again. After some vigorous rubbing he took his place in the line again. Corbett started to run but dropped the ball. A bluestocking made a dash at it but only knocked it towards his own goal. Then Newell made a dive and the ball was Harvard's with a gain of ten yards.

The Harvard rush-line was not doing any effective blocking and Lake made two tries at line-breaking with no success. On the third down Trafford made the usual point which McCormick caught fairly on the 35-yard line. Winter and Bliss both tried to get between Waters and Emmons, but the latter threw them each time.

Harvard's Weak Interference. Then it was Yale's turn to kick again and Bliss punted to Trafford near the middle of the field. Harvard's interferference in the wedge was easily broken, and Corbett didn't gain a yard. Then Trafford dug his way through the centre, but Harvard had not gained her five yards, and so she punted again. McCormick took it at Yale's 35 yard line.

Then the Yale players went at things with a dash. They all interfered beautifully for Sanford who gained 15 yards around the right end.

Winter and Hinkey made a hole between Newell and Hallowell, and McClung slipped through for another substantial gain. Morrison, Heffelfinger, Winter, McCormick and McClung in turn did the ground gaining and got through Harvard's line at almost every rush.

Umpire Coffin gave the blue five yards for Harvard's offside play and Yale had the ball within 25 yards of her opponent's goal. Then Harvard played better and Yale had to surrender the ball on four downs.

Trafford kept up the punting game, but the Yale backs never fumbled. Bliss made a dash around the right end and Morrison gained through the tackles. Yale made three downs, but a Harvard rusher was offside and Umpire Coffin paced off five more yards into Harvard's territory. A moment later Bliss dropped the ball and Waters fell on it.

Harvard had a chance to show what her rushing was worth. There was little interference by the forwards and Corbett and Lake went for the line in vain. Trafford kicked, McClung caught it in the middle of the field and Yale invaded Harvard's territory again. They got it up to the 30 yards line, but there Wallis held Waters and the umpire awarded the ball to Harvard.

Harvard on the Offensive.Corbett rushed six yards around the left end and the two Yale half backs tackled him together. Quarter back Gage called the ends in and worked the wedge for four yards right through Heffelfinger's arms. Yale's rushers were breaking through the line and Lake was quickly downed. Trafford gaind slightly through Winter, but when Corbett tried the same place the heavy Yale tackle got by and downed Corbett without gain.

Harvard's third down. Trafford punted to McCormick on the Yale 45-yard line. McCormick made twenty yards between Newell and Hallowell; Heffelfinger two yards. Winter fumbled the ball and Corbett dropped on it. Corbett gained eight yards through left end and tackle. Trafford tried to get by Winter, but lost five yards. Lake made no gain and Trafford kicked again to the Yale full back.

On the down, McCormick got around Emmons for six yards. The ball went to Harvard for holding. Winter broke through and downed Trafford with a loss. Corbett couldn't gain the five yards and Trafford punted again to Bliss. Yale gained nothing on the V. On the second down Bliss punted. Corbett muffed and Yale dropped on the ball. On the second down Morison was called behind the line for a punt and Corbett muffed again.

McClung's Brilliant Rushes.Yale had the ball on Harvard's 30-yard line and Bliss got ten yards more through good interference around the right end. Unfair holding gave the ball to Harvard. Again Harvard had the chance to rush, and again she could not gain. Trafford punted out of bounds. Yale got the ball in the middle of the field and McClung, aided by beautiful interference, made a most brilliant sally for twenty-five yards around Hallowell. Heffelfinger, Morison and McCormick advanced the leather to Harvard's 15-yard line. Another rush and it was only ten yards from the goal.

Harvard's Firm Srand. Then Harvard played hard and Yale bucked the line in vain. McClung took the ball back twenty yards to keep it for Yale; but they lost it on four downs. Trafford punted. Bliss kicked in return, but Newell broke through and stopped it, getting the ball on Yale's 45-yard line.

Harvard could not gain and Yale got the ball. Bliss kicked to Trafford. Neither he nor Lake could gain, and so the ball was sent back to Bliss. McClung made a slight gain, but Bliss dropped the ball. Emmons fell on it; but the whistle rang out sharp and clear, announcing that the first half was ended.

Yale, 4; Harvard, 0.Second Half.Harvard had the ball. Lake was put behind the V and gained 8 yards. Corbett made no gain around the right end and Lake got only two yards between Dexter and Waters. Trafford punted.

Bliss caught the ball on Yale's 35-yard line. On the first down he made four yards between Waters and Emmons. McCormick made two more in the hole prepared by Morison and Sanford. Then Bliss and McClung tried the old criss-cross trick. Hallowell and Newell broke through and spoiled it, downing the Yale captain with a loss. No gain and Bliss punted out of bounds. Trafford got the ball, Hallowell touched it in bounds and gained two yards. The Harvard forwards did no effective interfering and again Trafford punted to Bliss. He attempted to run but Newell downed him on Yale's 25-yard line.

Harvard's center was proving far stronger than the other parts of the rushline, and McCormick and Heffelfinger couldn't make a yard through it. Bliss punted, and Corbett made a fair catch in the middle of the field.

Yale's Sharp Work.Lake, no gain behind the V. Corbett, four yards lost. Three downs, and a punt out of bounds by Trafford. McCormick brought it in again on Yale's 20-yard line. The ball was well down into Yale's territory. It was three downs and Bliss punted short, hardly to the centre of the field. Corbett muffed the punt, and Trafford who was backing him up also fumbled it. Hinkey gave a dive and the ball was Yale's at the centre of the field. Rushes carried it straight up the field towards Harvard's goal. The ball was Yale's on the crimson 10-yard line, but Umpire Coffin detected Sanford holding.

Trafford's punt to relieve the goal was poor, and Yale had the ball again on Harvard's 15-yard line. But Harvard broke through and made Yale surrender the ball on four downs.

Trafford kicked on the first down. Bliss blocked off Hallowell and McCormick caught the punt and gained 15 yards along the side line. On the down he ran into Mackie's arms. Then Heffelfinger made a beautiful hole and Bliss invaded Harvard's territory 12 yards further. He fumbled a moment later and Lake dropped on the ball.

Corbett no gain. Trafford no gain. Three downs and then a punt by Trafford. The ball came back to Harvard on her 35 yard line. This time the backs gained their distance, and Hallowell wriggled through for six yards more. Corbett and Trafford got five yards, but Harvard was holding in the rush line and Yale broke the offensive. Back to the crimson 30 yard line Yale rushed the ball. Harvard showed her strength in the centre and got it in four downs.

Harvard's Costly Fumble. Then Gage worked the wedge on every down and Lake and Trafford got the game back to the centre of the field. Yale got the ball on four downs, but soon was forced to kick. Corbett took the ball on the 35 yard line. Two downs without gain and Corbett was signalled to try the right end. Not a man was there to interfere for him and Hinkey tackled him hard. Corbett dropped the ball and Bliss picked it up, aided by pretty interference got through the few Harvard players who were near and scored. McClung easily kicked the goal. Score, 10 to 0.

Harvard's Plucky Fight.Straight up the field without once losing the ball, Harvard rushed it to Yale's 15-yard line. They used the wedge and the "whirligig" constantly, and gained every time through Yale's center. At the 15-yard line Yale made a stand and Harvard's V could get no further. Then Trafford fell back for a try at goal from the field. The ball went low and struck Heffelfinger, who had broken through. It bounded off to the right and the Yale guard and Hallowell both made a dive for it. Hallowell got it and Harvard had the play again on Yale's 18-yard line. Again the Yale rushers stood firm and tackled low, and Harvard could make no gain. Then Trafford fell back again for a try at goal. The ball went spinning off to the left, and Harvard's last chance for scoring was gone.

The ball was brought out to the Yale 25-yard line. McCormick made a good gain behind the V and Heffelfinger got through the center. McClung, Morison and the Yale backs all gained through Harvard's forwards and rushed the play up to Harvard's 25-yard line. Bliss started to run, but Waters broke through and downed him. It was the last play of the game.
