The preliminary heats of the interscholastic boat races were rowed on the Charles Saturday afternoon. The course was a little less than a mile, starting just above Harvard Bridge and finishing at the Union Boat Club. Rough water and the hard rain made good rowing difficult. The first heat was won by Brookline High School with Waltham High second. Hopkinson won the second heat easily, after a very poor start, and Brown and Nichols finished second. In the third heat the water became smoother, and the race was a hard fight between Noble and Greenough's and Stone's, in which the former finally won by half a length.

This afternoon at 4.30 o'clock the three second crews will race and the winner will enter the final race with the three first crews tomorrow. After these races, two eights will be formed from all the schools, one from the B. A. A., and the other from the Union Boat Club. These eights will race about June 5 and after that an interscholastic eight will be picked which will row in the Metropolitan Regatta on June 18.
