A Bequest for Dormitories.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

According to a dispatch from St. Louis, George Smith, adopted son of James Smith, has bequeathed the sum of $450,000 to the University, to be used in erecting three dormitories. He has also left oil and crayon portraits of his foster-parents to be hung in Memorial Hall.

It seems probable that the donor was the George Smith who graduated in 1853, with the class of which President Eliot was a member. It has been suggested that the gift be applied to dormitories for the new Medical School.
