The Corporation has given permission to the Harvard Dining Association to drill an artesian well near the refrigerating plant on the Kirkland street side of Memorial Hall. The contract has been let to Messrs. B.F. Smith and Brothers of Boston and work will commence with-in a few days. The well is expected to be ready for use at the opening of College next autumn.
The well is designed to supply water for cooling the ammonia pipes of the ice plant, for the boilers, and for cleaning purposes.
It is hoped that the well, if successful, will reduce by over one-half the water bill of the Association, which now averages about $150 per month.
