FOOTBALL PRACTICE FASTER

Scrimmage Long and Hard, But Fumbling too Frequent.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The University football squad in secret practice yesterday played longer and harder in the scrimmage, and showed more fight and life, than on Wednesday, but fumbled entirely too often. Randall at left end on the first eleven was strong on the offensive. Neither Pope nor Meier engaged in the practice on account of injured knees, and Oveson, Montgomery, Cunniff and Barney, although on the field, took no part in the work. In singal practice the first team was lined up as follows: l.e., Rendall; l.t., Carr; l.g., Parker; c., Parkinson; r.g., Squires; r.t., Derby; r.e., Shurtleff; q.b., Kernan; l.h.b., Nichols; r.h.b., Hurley; l.b., Mils.

The scrimmage lasted 30 minutes. Hanley received the second team's kick-off on the 10-yard line, and ran it in 25 yards. After two short gains Wendell fumbled. The first eleven, however, regained the ball, but lost it by a second fumble on the 50-yard line. After rushing 5 yards the second team fumbled and the first eleven by straight rushing, wen down the field for a touchdown. The gains inside the second's 15-yard line, however, were very slow. Osborne made the touchdown. On the next play Hanley kicked off poorly. The second team then punted out from its 25-yard line to Wendell, who was downed in the middle of the filed. At the third down, on the second team's 30-yard line, the first eleven was forced to punt, and the ball rolled over the goal line. Hanley caught the kick-out and was downed on the second team's 50-yard line. Two short gains took the ball to the 45-yard line, from where Hanley went through behind Brill for a touchdown.

The date of the first open practice has not yet been decided, but will not be before next Tuesday.
