Mr. E. W. Libaire, the honorary manager of the chess class of Columbia, Harvard Yale and Princeton, will mail the following letter this morning:

"To the Honorary Secretary, Oxford University Chess Club:

"DEAR SIR:--On behalf of the American universities of Columbia, Harvard, Princeton and Yale, I have the honor to challenge your university, in conjunction with that of Cambridge, to play the third chess match by cable for the possession of the Rice Trophy during the spring of 1901, under the same conditions that have heretofore governed these contests.

"Should our challenge be accepted, I shall be glad to hear from you with regard to hear from with regard to the date for the match. "Yours very truly,   "E. W. LIBAIRE, Chairman."
