FOOTBALL WITH BATES

In Stadium at 4--Last Practice Less Spirited--First Team Scored Once.

The University football eleven will play Bates this afternoon at 4 o'clock in the Stadium. Last year Harvard defeated Bates in a very one-sided game, by the score of 34 to 6, Bates scoring on a cleverly concealed double pass. Last Saturday the Bates team defeated Hebron Academy, 11 to 0, using the forward pass successfully in both halves of the game. Only five men in the present line-up played against Harvard last year.

On the University team Mason will take Apollonian's place at fullback, as the latter received a bone bruise on his leg in the scrimmage of last Monday, which will probably keep him out of the game for two weeks or more. On the ends it is expected that all of the following five men will be played; Burnham, Kennard, Macdonald, Miller, and Orr. Warren will start the game at right tackle, but will later be replaced by Peirce. Hall will probably play the whole game at quarterback, and Lockwood at right half. The teams will line-up as follows: HARVARD.  BATES. Miller, Burnham, Kennard, l.e.  r.e., Cummings, Harris Osborne, l.t.  r.t., Schumacker Burr, l.g.  r.g., Booker Parker, e.  e., Cochran Kersburg, r.g.  l.g., Ricker, Colo Warren, Peirce, r.t.  l.t., Foster Orr, Macdonald, r.e.  l.e., Brown Hall, q.b.  q.b., Cobb Foster, l.h.  r.h., Fraser Lockwood, r.h.  l.h., Hull Mason, f.b.  f.b., Manning

The practice yesterday was not quite as spirited as on the previous day, due in part to the damp weather, which made it very warm for the men. In the 15 minute scrimmage the most interesting feature was a 22-yard end run by Lockwood, who carried the ball to within easy striking distance of the second team's goal, enabling the first team to score its only touchdown. Before the scrimmage the linemen were given individual practice in blocking and breaking through followed by punting practice, and a half-hour's line-up between the first and second teams, which was devoted exclusively to practice in quick punting and in the use of the forward pass. One new man reported: S. Morse '09, halfback.

The second team kicked off to Hall, who ran back 10 yards to the 31-yard line. Foster at once punted, the ball being slightly blocked, and downed by the second team on the 43-yard line. The team failed to gain, and punted, regaining the ball 20 yards ahead. The next two plays both lost ground and, on the 15-yard punt which followed, Foster caught the ball and ran back three yards to the 46-yard line. On the next play the first team fumbled, but recovered the ball, and then made a quick punt which sent the ball out of bounds on the second eleven's 35-yard line. After one play a forward pass was tried, but the ball touched the ground thus going to the first eleven. The eleven was penalized five yards for offside play after the next scrimmage, and then Lockwood made a 22-yard run around left end. With the ball on the 25-yard line, Foster rushed 10 yards in two plays, after which Osborne gained 8 yards more. On a rush through right tackle, Lockwood secured a touchdown, and Foster kicked the goal. For the rest of the time the ball vacillated between the 30-yard lines. Several forward passes were tried, but with rather poor success. The line-up for the scrimmage follows: FIRST ELEVEN.  SECOND ELEVEN. Miller, l.e.  r.e., Washburn Osborne, l.t.  r.t., Robinson Gilmore, Burr, l.g.  r.g., Brock Fraser, c.  c., Plumb Kersburg, r.g.  l.g., Burns Warren, r.t.  l.t., Somes Orr, r.e.  l.e., Harding Hall, q.b.  q.b., Cate Foster, l.h.  r.h., Howes, Rand Lockwood, r.h.  l.h., Gilder Mason, f.b.  f.b., Morse, Jones

The following men have recently been taken up to the football training table: Burnham, Gilmore, Hall, Lincoln, Lockwood, Miller, Peirce, and Warren.

The second team training table will start this morning with breakfast at 8.15 o'clock on the second floor of the Union. The following men will report: Brock, Cate, Comstock, Gilder, Gray, Grosvenor, Hoar, Irving, Nourse, Orr, Pell, Philippbar, Plumb, Robinson, Taylor, Tweed, and assistant manager Dutcher.
