SPRING TRACK PRACTICE

Progress Retarded by Weather.--Finals of 440-Yard Race in Stadium at 3.

The University and Freshman track teams have been considerably handicapped in the early work by the inclement weather. Work on the track began four days earlier than last year, but has been light for the greater part of the time on account of the poor condition of the track. The men are in good physical condition and have been worked out sufficiently to give the coaches a better line on them than was possible from the winter work. A full flight of ten hurdles was put up yesterday for the first time. Next week the training table will be started at Memorial Hall with about 20 men and will be moved to the Union after the Easter recess.

Field event competitions have been carried on under the supervision of Coach Quinn in the new pits at the open end of the Stadium. The hammerthrow, which is practiced behind the Stadium so as not to interfere with other sports, has the fewest number of promising men of any event.

Several of the new men have shown considerable promise. T. S. Blumer '10 has done well in the sprints, besides his regular event, the high hurdles, and F. H. Burr '09 has improved steadily in the shot put, while the distance events have been strengthened by the showing of H. F. Miller '08 in the mile, and M. H. Whitney '09 in the two-mile. S. C. Lawrence '10 has continued to improve in his pole-vaulting, which was one of the surprises of the indoor carnival. Of the new men in the high jump, R. P. Pope '10 has jumped consistently around 5 feet 10 inches, while C. C. Little '10 is doing well in the broad jump.

The final heat of the 440-yard competition will be held in the Stadium this afternoon at 3 o'clock. The winner will have the privilege of holding the Wells cup for one year. The following nine men qualified in the trials Thursday; K. B. Day '11, 30 yds.; L. P. Dodge '08, scratch; H. Guild '10, 15 yds.; H. E. Keays '10, 6 yds.; A. D. Piper '09, 15 yds.; F. M. deSelding '10, 2 yds.; M. Steinhart '11, 15 yds.; H. Watson '10, 3 yds.; W. F. Whitcher '09, 9 yds.

The handicap high jump competition, scheduled for yesterday, has again been postponed on account of the high wind. Provided the weather is favorable, it will be held in the Stadium, Monday at 4 o'clock. Entries may still be made with Coach Quinn any time before 12 o'clock Monday at the Locker Building.
