FRESHMEN DEFEATED GROTON

The Freshman football team defeated the Groton School at Groton yesterday afternoon, by the score of 16 to 0. All of the scoring was done in the first half of the game, during which period the 1916 team were much superior to their opponents. Groton stiffened up in the second half, however, and kept the Freshmen from scoring, playing hard and dogged football.

How Freshmen Scored.

Groton kicked off to Watson who ran the ball to the middle of the field before he was thrown. A series of hard line-plunges and a pretty 20-yard run by Mahan around left end brought the ball to Groton's 30-yard line. At this point Watson tried a forward pass but the ball went wild and play was resumed again on the 30-yard line. A few minutes later Mahan kicked a field goal from the 20-yard line, the first score of the game.

Harvard kicked off to Groton and then succeeded in holding so as to force them to kick. Groton regained the ball, however, on the 40-yard line, only to lose it again on a fumble, when Gilman recovered it and ran for a touchdown. Gilman kicked a difficult goal. The first quarter ended with the ball in Groton's possession on its 35-yard line. Score, Harvard 1916 10, Groton 0.

Second Quarter.

Groton received the kick-off but lost the ball to Gilman on a bad fumble. The Freshmen soon advanced the ball well down the field when a clever forward pass, Mahan to Rollins, brought the second touchdown. Gilman failed to kick the goal.

No scoring in Second Half.

During the remaining quarter and throughout the rest of the game Groton played hard football but was unable to come within Harvard's 35-yard line. Several forward passes were attempted, with varying success.

On the whole the Freshmen played fairly well for their first game, but the team is still weak on the defensive and the ends were rather slow in running down kicks and in breaking up interference. The backs played aggressively. Mahan did some fast work in the open field and McKinlock proved himself a consistent ground gainer through the line.
