"SOMETHING FOR NOTHING"

Outline of Play Which Dramatic Club Will Give This Year.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

"Something for Nothing" is the title of the play which the Harvard Dramatic Club has elected to give this fall as its fifth annual production. The play is in three acts, by David Carb '09.

The play is a presentation of the conditions which corrupt politics. The Boss becomes the spokesman of the people he represents--giving them what they want because their wants are his wants--because he is their mouthpiece, and being like them, no better and no worse, he understands them. The scene is laid in a large American city, and the conflict is between the Boss who justifies himself to himself, and his neice who sees clearly the destruction that his altruistic intentions--altruistic though they are avaricious -- precipitate. But from blaming the Boss, she comes to understand that not he but the people of whom he is a crystallization, a projected image, are to blame.

And so she discovers that to defeat him is futile--he will merely be superseded by someone else. She must destroy the ignorance that makes the electorate demand graft and willing to pay high for it.

Call for Candidates.

There will be a meeting for candidates of the business and stage managing departments in Thayer 57 on Monday at 7 o'clock. All men interested in the handling of scenery and properties or in the electrical work of the production are urged to come to this meeting. The club is also in need of publicity men and business assistants. Later next week there will be competitive trials for parts in the play. The definite day will be announced soon.
