CLASS DAY AS USUAL

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

When our nation first aligned itself with those Powers who are fighting the most awful was in the dark history of the world the demand was born that we forego all of out former modes of existence and devote ourselves entirely to preparation for conflict. Great nations cannot live by war alone. The European people have already discovered that truth, and as many as possible are striving to keep alive some shadow of their former gaiety. It is only an apparent paradox that the sight of a movie of Chaplin the night before going into battle may make brave soldiers fight yet more bravely.

There has been some talk of omitting for the graduating class this year all those traditional festivities which he served for other classes as the pleasantest occasion of the four-year course. It is doubtful whether any large purpose would be served by having 1917 pass form college unsung and unrejoiced. The German arms will not by one day be rendered less invincible. Nor will the members of the class be rendered more stoic for enduring the fortunes of war.

This is the last time that many men in the class may ever be together. Much of what is now close and intimate will be shattered when men are called to make the ultimate sacrifice for the name of their country. If every there was time when the Class Day exercises and festivities should be held, if there was ever a time when the class should be bound together in the strength of common tradition, the present is that time. Class Day will be held whatever happens, and Seniors should make all preparations to make this Class Day as memorable as those of the past.
