GARCELON HURDLES AND FRESHMAN TRIALS TODAY

Haners and Thayer Are Favorites for Hurdle Races--Friday's Handicap Meet Only for University Squad--Hard Practice Yesterday

When the Oxford-Cambridge lacrosse game forced the University and Freshman track squads to leave the cinders within the Stadium yesterday for the new track in the northwest part of Soldiers Field, Coach Bingham did not relax from the strenuous program which he has outlined for the week, and drilled his men with arduous starts and informal races. Coach Tolbert did not train the Freshmen quite as strenuously, inasmuch as they will hold a series of time trials and competitions this afternoon which will play an important part in determining the personnel of the squad which will go to Andover Saturday for the first meet of the Freshman schedule. The sprinters received special attention yesterday from Mr. R. C. Foster '11, who emphasized the importance of a quick start.

The latter were worked very hard in spite of the races for the Garcelon trophies which take place at 4.30 o'clock this afternoon. With the exception of Whitney, who is out with an injury, all of the hurdlers of both squads will be on hand for these races, which will consist of a 65-yard high and 120-yard low contest. The winners of the races will be presented by Mr. W. F. Garcelon '05 with a miniature bronze hurdle similar to those given last year. Thayer and Hauers are looked upon as the most promising contestants today. Hauers, a letter man, has had a great deal of experience and is usually ranked with Whitney as the best of the University hurdlers, but lately Thayer has shown great improvement and has even nosed out the veteran in one or two informal brushes.
