1925 EIGHTS PICKED YESTERDAY AS RESULT OF RACE OF SIX CREWS

INITIAL CONTEST TO BE APRIL 29 WITH M. I. T. '25

Dr. Howe and Coach Bert Haines last night picked a complete list of graded Freshman crews, as a result of a race yesterday in which six yearling eights took part.

The contest over the mile course was won by D. F. M. 1, the later eight not finding it necessary to extend itself in order to cross the line half a length ahead of A. C. M. 1. It was the superior weight of the former combination that gave it the necessary margin of victory. Out - scaling their lighter rivals by a full fifteen pounds to the man, the football oarsmen forced their way to a commanding lead by sheer power of stroke, a last minute spurt by the autumn crew boat falling to cut down their lead by any appreciable distance. I. F. M. 1, E. F. M. 2, A. C. M. 2, and A. C. M. 3 trailed in the order named.

With three Freshman eights on the river, the objective of the next few weeks practice will be the contest with the M. I. T. Freshmen on April 29. The large size of the yearling squad is a decided asset, affording as it does a wide range of choice to the coaches in the selection of material, and giving each man the opportunity of advancement into a higher eight.

Seabury Cook of New Bedford, chosen to stroke Crew A, has already proved his ability as a pace setter, notably in the Freshman race last fall against the University boat. In addition to Cook, three other former members of A. C. M. 1-Curran, Welsman, and Bangs-have won berths in the first shell, while only two members of the victorious football crew made seats. Kelley, at number 7, rowed that position on the second football boat, and Hastings was formerly placed on A. C. M. 2.

Following is the complete boating of Freshman crews, including three graded first eights and two 150-pound shells. Five four-oared boats have also been picked.
