CRIMSON DRAWS FIRST YEAR MEN

New Candidates Will Compete for Only Nine Weeks--Freshmen to Have Two Chances to Become Editors

With the opening of competitions for Freshmen in three departments on Wednesday, February 8, the CRIMSON will initiate a new plan of competition for first year men. Instead of the 11 week contest formerly held in the spring for members of the Freshman class, the News, Business, and Photographic Departments of the CRIMSON will conduct two nine week competitions this year. The first will start two days after the beginning of the second half year and will last until the spring vacation. The second will get under way shortly after the middle of March and will last until the latter part of May.

The decision at the commencement of the present academic year to cut all CRIMSON competitions down to nine weeks has necessitated this change which gives Freshmen two opportunities to try out for the Board instead of one as was the case in previous years. The shift from one to two competitions will also involve a certain change in the nature of these contests. Freshmen were formerly called out around the first of March and then competed for membership on the Board until the middle of May. This was the only chance offered to make the Board until the Sophomore year. With the earlier opening date this year and the opportunity of entering a second competition, the first Freshman contest will of necessity be more closely narrowed down than previous first year competitions. The shortening in length will likewise product an added emphasis on the competitive side of the work.

The first competitions will open with a meeting in the Crimson Building, 14 Plympton Street, at 7 o'clock of candidates for all three departments.
