Playfair Wins Varsity Race in First Encounter of Season--1937 Runners Also Take Purple Cubs

Taking seven of the first eight places, the Varsity Cross Country team swamped Holy Cross, 19-36, yesterday afternoon, over the four mile Charles River course Robert S. Playfair '36, captain of last year's freshman team, led the pack of harriers at the finish, with Kenny, star of the visiting contingent, trailing by almost twenty yards.

Kenny, Arthur S. Pier '35 and John P. Schen '35, were bunched together near the finish, but the Purple flash finally stepped ahead to clinch second place, with Pier and Schen following in that order.

The Summary: Score; Harvard 19; Holy Cross 36.

Winner: Robert S. Playfair '36; Kenny (H.C); Arthur S. Pier '35; John P. Scheu '35; Leonard C. Leen '36; Charles F. Woodard '35; James Parton '34; Louis H. Orr, Jr. '36; Burke (H.C.). Time: 23 min., 52 sec.

Leading his team-mates and opponents by three seconds, Malloy, of the Holy Cross Freshman harriers, took first place in the race between Harvard and Holy Cross Freshmen yesterday afternoon. The next six places were annexed by Harvard runners, making the final score: Harvard 1937, 20; Holy Cross 1937, 35. The race was run on the 1 1-4 mile course encircling the Stadium.
