UNIVERSITY GIVES OFFICIAL AID TO ANTI-WAR STRIKE

Official support will be given to the third National Anti-War Strike at Harvard on Wednesday, April 22, it was announced last night at the meeting of the Harvard Student Union.

The meeting will be held at 11 o'clock inside Hemenway Gymnasium, or in Sanders Theatre if the Corporation votes its permission. The College will defray the expenditures of the meeting and lend its aid in securing speakers for the meeting.

Hanford, Quinn to Appear

Dean Hanford is expected to appear on the platform and Thomas H. Quinn '36, president of the Student Council, has agreed to preside.

The Student Union last night voted to affiliate with the national American Student Union formed at Columbus, Ohio, last Christmas. The vote on national affiliation, 39 to 35, was later qualified to require the approval of a majority of the 257 members registered yesterday.

Action is Reversal

The action of the University marks a definite break with its past policy, and signifies a desire on the part of college officials to avoid the unfortunate outdoor strikes of the past two years. For its promise of open cooperation with the Union the University was voted thanks at last night's meeting.

Support has been promised the strike by the Cambridge Teachers' Union and by the Radcliffe Student union.

Word "Strike" Wins

A vote to substitute some other name for the word "strike" failed by a narrow margin.

Post-cards will be sent out at once to ratify or reject the action of last night's bare quorum in voting national affiliation: Meanwhile Lawrence S. Levy '39 was made head of the Strike Committee delegated to secure speakers and complete arrangements for 11 o'clock April 22.

Hanford Issues Statement

Dean Hanford's official statement is as follows:

"I am pleased to cooperate with the Harvard Student Union in arranging an indoor peace meeting on the morning of April 22. The College will place a room at the disposal of the undergraduate committee in charge of the meeting.
