YALE JUNIOR VARSITY UPSETS CRIMSON 14-6

WITHINGTON TALLIES FOR LONE HARVARD SCORE

By David B. Stearns

Despite a whirlwind first half in which they scored once, penetrated deep into Yale territory on three sustained drives, and dominated most of the play, the Crimson Jayvee squad dropped a hard-fought game to a persistent Eli eleven, 14 to 6, yesterday afternoon on Soldiers Field.

Yale was completely out-played in the first half as the Lamar-coached squad rolled up a total of ten first downs while holding the opposition to three. In the initial period, Hal Tine's running accounted for most of the yardage as he reeled off substantial gains to put the ball in scoring position. Lo Withington took the ball on the one yard line and crashed over for the first score, seven minutes after the kick-off. Captain Hammy Wood's try for the conversion was unsuccessful.

Yale Rallies

After a scoreless second stanza, the Elis went into the third quarter with a new fight, and before the final gun, they tallied twice and racked up seven first downs while holding the Lamarmen to three.

In the Crimson line, playing his last game, Captain Hammy Wood was outstanding. John Dimmoff and Bob Haydock were strong at the terminal posts and Gus Soule played his usual dependable game at guard. Tine, Ed Buckley, and Red Townsend did well in the backfield.

Yardage totals indicate a decided advantage for the Crimson who gained 227 yards to the Elis 184 and totaled 13 first downs to Yale's ten.
