Jim Lightbody's 1.58.4 victory in the 880 featured the second day of the annual University handicap meet on the Stadium oval Saturday.

Scratch starters dominated the events outside of the mile, 440, and the hurdles. Fred Ulen captured the century in the fair early-season time of 10.3, while favorite Joe Donnelly snagged the furlong in 22.2.

In the quarter Al Hanion at scratch failed to overcome Bob Haydock's 40 yard start which enabled him to win in 50.6.

Ros Brayton got the only sixth in the mile, as Cy Marden capitalized on a 200 yard handicap to break the tape in 4:19.4. Scratchmen Dave Simboli, Bob Nichols, and Pen Tuttle finished in that order in the two-mile, while Roger Schafer won both hurdle events.
