A new set of assistants isn't the only thing Arthur Valpey will bring with him from Michigan, according to basketball coach Bill Barclay.
"He will probably transplant Crisler's system here intact," Barclay said yesterday. "Naturally, he'll have some of his own ideas, but his basic philosophy will be like Crisler's."
Barclay should know. He became "a very close friend" of Valpey's when the two played on the same Wolverine elevens in '35, '36, and '37. Both men broke into the Michigan coaching organization together in 1942.
The Crimson basketball coach considers Valpey easy to get along with. "He uses his head," Barclay says.
In Barclay's opinion, the New Look at Soldiers Field come spring practice will feature plenty of pitch outs, spinners, short punt formations and the like.
