150-lb. Crew Finishes Third in Title Race; Lacrosse Team Wins in Dust, Rain, 7-6

Playing the first half of its game at Springfield in clouds of dust stirred up at every step, and the last half in a semitropical Connecticut rainstorm, the lacrosse team fought its way through the elements and a tough Springfield squad to win, 7 to 6, Saturday.

The fiendish field conditions in the first half especially troubled the Varsity, and at the quarter. Springfield held a 2 to 0 lead. But the team caught on, and by the half had drawn up to even the score at 4 to 4.

Then came the rain, which wetted down the dust but also reduced visibility, and--worst of all for lacrosse players--began to contract the gut cords which make the "net" of the lacrosse stick. The Varsity fortunately got three more goals before this shrinking effect made it difficult to catch the ball.

Springfield fought back with two more scores in the last period as the rain lifted, but Bruce Munro's team had the game in hand by then.

All six Springfield goals were scored by an attackman, Dutch Garber. The best play of the game was a scoring shot by Bob Lange backward over his head. Both Hans Estin and Will Davis were cheated when shots of theirs bounced off the goal pipes.

Freshmen Beat Tabor

The freshman squad beat down Tabor Academy, 10 to 1, on the Tabor home grounds Saturday in a game which saw the whole squad go into action. Dune McCallum and Lou Schaffer were high scorers for the Crimson in this sixth victory, each scoring three points.
