Speaking in Dudley Hall at the first annual dinner for commuting freshmen, Dean Leighton told members of the Class of 1955 that non-residents as well as resident students should actively participate in all branches of University life.

Leighton praised the founders of the Non-Resident Students' Center for doing what he termed "a remarkable job," and hoped the present program for expanding Dudley's facilities would continue.

"The College has a big stake in the commuters," the Dean told an audience of 125 students. "You are a part of the community and you shouldn't feel you don't belong to it," he added.

Another speaker, Adolph W. Samborski '25, director of Intramural Athletics, said he held high hopes for this year's Dudley touch football team. He announced that the Center would enter a team in the newly-formed House soccer league, and added that there were still openings for players on both squads.

Last fall, the commuters, led by co-athletic secretary Ambrose J. Redmond '52, took first place in touch competition.

Robert L. Fischelis '49, graduate secretary of the Center, and Forrest L. Gould '52, chairman of Dudley's House Committee, were praised by both speakers for their work on behalf of the commuters.
