President and Mrs. Conant lunched at the Harvard Club of London last Tuesday, and shattered the Club's tradition of all-male meetings. President Conant, on a private visit to England, was introduced by Walter S. Gifford '05, American Ambassador to Great Britain.

In his speech, he reviewed changes at Harvard during and after the war, and said that the period of demobilization had not been so difficult for the University as some had expected.

He described the current task as one of rearmament, in which American armed forces must be kept at three to four million and technological resources must be exploited. President Conant added that peace could be won, in time, by a constant show of strength.
