Salvation Army Tins Lighter Than in '51

Salvation Army collections in the Harvard Square area are accounting for a large part of the money collected in Cambridge, according to Senior Captain E. Walter Lamie, but the area is still lagging behind its last year's mark.

From the start of the drive, the day after Thanksgiving, donations at the two collection stations in the Square amount to $690.67.

Last year the Salvation Army collected $6,324.42 in the northern part of Cambridge covered by the First Corps, to which the Harvard area contributed $1,177.41. This year, with eight days to go until the drive closes, the various kettles in Harvard and Central Squares have netted only $1,591.93.

The two stations are manned from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. by six volunteers and members of the organization.

Money donated during the drive is specially earmarked for Christmas groceries for 250 Cambridge families.
