Corporation Announces First Actions on Furry

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The University began its investigation of the case of Wendell H. Furry, associate professor of Physics, when it yesterday announced that it had turned over copies of the official transcript of the hearings before the Velde Committee to the Faculty Advisory Committee.

It also announced the appointment of a second committee, composed of Corporation members who would interview Furry, and meet with the faculty group in an attempt to reach a decision on what action, if any, will be taken against the 46-year-old professor.

The names of the Corporation members on the new committee were not revealed in the special announcement.

University Policy

Two weeks ago, the Corporation appointed the Faculty Committee to help formulate University policy should any professor refuse to testify at the House inquiry of subversives in education.

Last Thursday, Furry refused to tell the House committee whether or not he is or has ever been a member of the Communist Party. Thursday night, he told reporters that he is not at present a member of the Party.

The six-man faculty group is headed by Provost Buck. Other members are: Dean Edward S. Mason of the Graduate School of Public Administration; Dean Erwin N. Griswold of the Law School; Mason Hammond '25, Pope Professor of Latin Language and Literature; George P. Baker, James J. Hill Professor of Transportation and member of the Faculty at the School of Public Administration; and Edward M. Purcell, professor of Physics.
