Varsity Soccer Team Tops Red, 2-1, on Malin's Goal

By Michael S. Lottman, Special to the CRIMSON

ITHACA--The varsity soccer team opened what nobody thought would be a successful defense of the Ivy League title by defeating Cornell, 2 to 1, here Saturday. Perhaps now there will be a few more believers, since in the Big Red the Crimson beat a team with a flashy offense, an experienced defense, and one of the League's best goalies.

Seamus Malin tallied the deciding goal on a brilliant head-in of Chris Martin's corner kick after 4:39 of the fourth quarter. The Crimson held off Cornell for the rest of the game, but the varsity nearly saw its victory snatched away is the contest's final 30 seconds.

Hannington Chite, Cornell's flashy inside, was awarded a penalty kick with half a minute to go. Coach Bruce Munro was too nervous even to watch the attempt, but apparently Chite was even more jittery, for his kick went soaring far above the crossbar.

The Crimson struck first after 9:26 of the second period, Martin dribbled all by himself down the left sidelines, and got off a low, spinning shot toward the Big Red nets. Scotty Holmes, the Cornell goalie, confidently went down on one knee to stop the ball, but it spun out of his grasp and away from his desperate effort to retrieve it.

If the Crimson's first goal was the least bit tainted, Cornell's tally five minutes later was also faintly suspicious. Big Red inside Gallo Plaza took the ball straight down the middle, successfully faking fullbacks Tim Morgan and Charley David. Plaza sent a pass to right wing Dannsit Wongprasat, and when Crimson goalie Bob Forbush came out for the ball, Wongprasat had an easy shot at the nets.

Adams Stars in Goal

After the intermission, John Adams replaced Forbush in the goal, and contributed some sensational saves. When the Cornell line once again got by both Crimson fullbacks late in the game, Adams' headlong rush forced a missed shot.

Although the defense occasionally showed the absence of fullback Sandy Cortesi, Martin and David played well for the most part. They were aided by left halfback Bill King, who turned in his best performance of the year on defense, and right half Bill Driver.

Tony Davies, Munro's sophomore find, filled in at center half and center forward with considerable success, displaying his uncanny dribbling ability.

When Ron Maierhoffer graduated last spring, the feeling around the League was that Cornell would gain from not having to put up with a star who rarely did anything but shoot and dribble. Now, with Chite, the Big Red is back in the same old rut. Although the speedy inside was the flashiest player on the field, he couldn't zero in on the Crimson goal, and he refused to set up his teammates.
