Squash Team Dumps Army

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Paced by its strong top three, the Harvard squash team swept over Army Saturday afternoon in Hemenway, 8-1, for its second straight victory.

Anil Nayar at number one and Jose Gonzales at number three both quickly throttled their opponents, 3-0.

Second man Rick Sterne dropped the second game to Barry Conway's crosscourt volleying. But the Crimson southpaw used the corners for a 3-1 win, 15-6, 9-15, 15-4, 15-11.

Harvard's middle three players found the Cadets annoying. Gordie Black was stunned in the first two games, 6-15, 5-15, by a slamming serve. The Crimson's number six man then slowed down the match, wore out his opponent, and pulled out the last three games 15-10, 15-7, 15-2.

Matt Hall at number five was pressed after his first game, but pulled out the match, 15-7, 10-15, 17-16, 16-13. Of the middle three only Captain Craig Stapleton escaped without losing a game, winning 15-7, 18-15, 15-8.

The last three matches were clearcut: John Harwood took three straight games; Yoshi Akabane, playing after a week's illness, bore down for a 3-1 victory. Sophomore Michel Scheinmann lost on errors in his first varsity match, 3-0.

In other Saturday afternoon squash. Harvard's JV swamped Andover, 6-1, while the Harvard freshmen blitzed Exeter, 6-1.
