Dartmouth Drops Brown From First With 31-21 Upset

Joe Yukica took an escorted trip to the showers, the Hanover faithful exploded into frenzied ecstatsy and Dartmouth stood alone atop the Ivy League after pulling a stunning 31-21 upset over Brown Saturday in Providence.

Assuring itself of at least a tie for the Ivy title, Dartmouth sailed with the arm of senior quarterback Buddy Teevens, who completed 16 of 21 passes with one touchdown toss, and the legs of sophomore halfback Jeff Dufresne, who churned out 127 yards and three scores.

After Dartmouth had garnered a 21-7 lead, Brown stormed back to tie the score in the third quarter. The second score came when Rick Villela turned a fourth-and-one sweep into a 15-yd. scoring romp.

But a 20-yd. punt off a low snap erased all the Bruins' good fortune. With possession at the Brown 47, the Green Machine gave Dufresne the ball on third-and-one, and the halfback blasted into the endzone for the win.

Tie for Second

Chris Swatch's 44-yd. field goal added the insurance that dropped Brown into a second-place tie with the resurging Elis.

With a play stolen directly from the almals of great volleyball performances, Yale delighted a home crowd with a 23-7 thrashing of the cellar-bound Princeton Tigers.

Holding a 10-7 lead in the third period, Yale turned a miracle to put the game in its favor. Senior quarterback Pat O'Brien lofted a down-the-middle toss to favorite target John Spagnola, but the Eli receiver could only tip the pass high up into the air.

Then teammate Bob Krystnik raced to the scene, grabbed the ball while the stunned Princeton safetyman watched, and galloped 30 yards into the endzone for the game's big score.

Joe Holland Express

In New York, the Joe Holland Express got back in gear, racking up 189 yards and three touchdowns to lead Cornell along a 28-point, second-half rally that gave the Big Red a 35-14 win over Columbia's Lions.
