Aquawomen Sink UConn; Floyd, Zimic, Kim Shine

Never was the adage "Appearance can be deceiving" more appropriate than when applied to the Harvard's women's swim team's humiliation of the University of Connecticut Saturday at Blodgett Pool, 94-39. For when one looks beyond the 13 Harvard first-place finishes and the occasional 1-2-3 sweeps, one sees times that range from slow to mediocre, interspersed periodically with inspired flashes of swimming.

Consistent

Freshman Debbie Zimic cemented her position as the most quietly consistent performer on the team at the meet. Zimic quickly grabbed the lead in the 500-yd. freestyle with her opening 100 split of 1:00.99, and then repeated 1:04s and 1:02s to take the contest with a 5:15.50--a full pool length ahead of the next finisher.

Zimic--the meet's only triple winner--also posted winning times of 1:03.84 and 1:02.04 in the 100-yd. individual medley and the 100-yd. butterfly.

Yardling Jeanne Floyd's freestyle prowess was also evident as she easily locked up the 50- and 100-yd. freestyles with times of 26.10 and 55.38, as well as swimming on the victorious 200-yd. freestyle rely team.

Take a Dip

Floyd's freestyle times have earned her a trip to the Eastern Seaboard Championships in March--a meet whose cutoffs she dipped under again Saturday.

The only other double winners of the afternoon were junior Pam Stone and freshman Susan Kim. Stone edged out teammate Adriana Holy in both the one-and three-meter diving contests with well-executed dives that often earned her sixes and sevens, and Kim took the 50-and 100-yd. breaststrokes with times of 33.17 and 1:12.50.

Noteworthy

Other noteworthy performances included freshman Jessica Rice's second-place time of 31.62 in the 50-yd. backstroke, and sophomore Debbie "Sub-Deb" Markson's anchoring 25.70 split on the 200-yd. freestyle relay.

After the meet, coach Vicki Hays expressed unhappiness over what she termed the "lack of spark, endurance and speed" of the team.

Tired

"We had a lot of good effort today, but almost everyone lost stamina during reading period and exams," Hays said, adding that she plans to train the team through next weekend's meet against Princeton, and then taper them for the contest against Yale on February 14.

Princeton--the 13th best team in the country--features a clutch of stellar performers, including Hawaiian backstroker Kaili Chun, who last year opted for the Orange and Black over the Crimson.

No Way

"In all honesty, I have to say that we don't have a chance against Princeton," Hays said, adding, "There is no way we could have turned around our team enough in one year to compete on Princeton's level."

The aquawomen will next see action Wednesday when they travel to Boston College to defend their title in the Greater Boston Swimming Championships.
