Fans Warned To Cease Their 'Vulgar' Behavior

By Preston W. Brooks

In the Wake of a recent increase in excessive rowdiness at athletic events, Dean John B Fox Jr '59 and Athletic Director John P. Reardon Jr '60 yesterday criticized crowd conduct in a public advertisement.

Citing "obscene language" and "vulgar and raucous" behavior, the statement urged fans to end their "denigration of athletic events," particularly hockey games, by throwing objects and using offensive languages.

At the Cornell hockey game last year, over enthusiastic fans threw objects ranging from tennis balls to a five crimson colored chicken on the ice. At the end of the game, an excited fan hurled a beer bottle at the players, felling the Cornell goalie.

Yesterday's statement published in The Crimson described such behavior as dangerous and conducive to violence and hatred, suggesting that responsible fans redirect this "misguided support to more constructive forms.

"We hope that people will understand that we are simply asking them to be more considerate to other spectators." Fox said in the interview. The statement was passed out at yesterday's hockey game against Dartmouth to remind people of the College's concern.
