Fire Destroys Two Cars

HARVARD BRIEF

By Alan E. Wirzbicki

Two parked cars were totaled last night across from Cambridge Common after a fire caused by a cigarette butt spread from a trash can to adjacent car tires.

Heavy winds blew the fire from the can to the vehicles, a light blue Toyota Corolla and a gray Jeep Cherokee, at about 7:40 p.m., said Cambridge Fire Inspector Ed Fowler.

Fowler said the fire first spread to the rear wheels of the Cherokee before being blown to the Corolla parked behind it.

The flames gutted the hood of the Corolla and charred the back of the Cherokee.

There were no suspects, according to a firefighter on the scene.
