To the editors:
The reactions to the impeachment process expressed by Erin Ashwell (Letters, Dec. 14) and The Crimson's editorial supporting censure of the president illustrate selective ignorance of the nature of republican government. This crisis illustrates precisely why policy is not made by pollsters but by rational, level-headed representatives who can fully appreciate the implications to American politics. The fact that Democratic spin doctors and an accomplice media have been able to successfully frame this issue as "just about sex" has more to do with public apathy than any sort of rational public discourse on the subject.
The President lied under oath, and did so repeatedly. The fact that the American public doesn't find this to be a serious matter frightens me, and says more about the callowness of the American people than it does about the propriety of the impeachment process.
