CATALOGUE OF PHILLIPS EXETER ACADEMY, 1873 - 74.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

THE catalogue of this famous school is particularly interesting this year, owing to the great change that has lately been made in the course of studies. The object of this change is to meet the new requirements at Harvard; and as it was found to be impossible to perform the additional work in the already crowded three-year course, another year, called the "Preparatory," has been added.

Greek grammar, which was formerly part of the course for the Middle year, is now among the studies of the Junior; and Latin grammar, formerly in the Junior year, is now in the Preparatory. The work of the first three years is so arranged as to prepare the student for the partial examination at Harvard.

For the Senior year the course is the De Senectute, Virgil's Bucolics, a book of Herodotus, and one of the Iliad, with geometry and logarithms. Besides these branches Shakespeare, Scott, and Goldsmith are studied to a certain extent in this year, and some time is devoted to French, physics, and modern and physical geography.

The Hale scholarship, with an income of one hundred and forty dollars, and the Gordon scholarship of seventy dollars, have lately been founded, thus making, with the Bancroft, three in the Academy. The school seems to be in a prosperous condition, as one hundred and sixty-eight students are named in the catalogue.

Upon the retirement of Dr. Soule, Mr. Albert C. Perkins was chosen principal, and he has this year entered upon the duties of the position.
