HUPD Chief Says Harvard Yard Encampment is Peaceful, Defends Students’ Right to Protest
The annual Fall Tournament of the Longwood Club began yesterday. The grass courts were in excellent condition. This tournament is of especial interest because of the large number of Harvard men playing.
Following are the scores of the play in the preliminary round:- R. B. Hale, '91, beat B. Mitchell, 6-1, 6-3. Hale played swiftly and placed well. E. Wrenn, '92, beat Francis Blake, '93, 6-2, 6-1 by good volleying. Hugh Tallant, '91, beat A. F. Fuller 6-2, 6-1. Waterhouse beat Philip Manchester, '93, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. G. F. Brown, Jr., '92, beat P. Mansfield 6-2, 6-0. F. H. Hovey, L. S., beat H. G. Bixby, 6-4, 6-4 Inasmuch as Hovey will be one of the single men to represent Harvard at the Intercollegiate tournament next week, his fine form is very gratifying to Harvard men. The match was a hard fight from the beginning and was won by Hovey's good back hand line strokes.
In the next match F. Mansfield, Gr., beat H. T. Allen 6-0, 6-2. D. K. Snow beat W. C. Eaton, '92, 6-0, 6-1. P. E. Presbrey beat J. L. Butler 6-1, 6-2. G. Smith beat A. S. Hill, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Unfinished matches; Chase, '92, vs. G. Crocker: J. B. Reid vs. A. L. Ripley: Lewis Rogers vs. P. Manchester. Byes, G. W. Lee, W. C. Barley, Jr., Rufus T. Thomas. Play will begin today at 2.
