'VARSITY BASEBALL.

The Nine Leaves for Princeton this Afternoon at 4.45.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The 'Varsity squad practiced yesterday on Soldiers Field for the first time this season, nearly two weeks earlier than the out-door work began last year.

Although the ground was soft and the wind high the practice was not at all discouraging. During the first part of the afternoon the men batted at the nets where Freshmen pitchers were used for the most parts. The squad was then divided into two parts, Captain Dean coaching one and Rand the other. Two nines were formed from each which took turns batting and fielding, although no regular game was played.

The names and positions of the men on Captain Dean's nines were as follows:

1b, Lewis; 2b, Dean, Chandler; 3b, Stevenson; s. s., Chandler, Hayes; l. f., McCall, c. f., Lynch; r. f., Burgess.

1b, Foster '98; 2b, Beardsell; 3b, Ewer; s. s., Laughlin; l. f., Morse; c. f., Beale, r. f., Abbott.

Paine, Haughton, Fitz, McCormick, and Cozzens pitched, and Davis '99, Cochrane, and Moore caught.

Rand's two nines were composed as follows:

Sands, p.; Egbert, c.; Davis '98, 1b.; Kernan, 2b.; Gregory, 3b.; McVey, s. s.; Holt, l. f.; Curtis, c. f.; Goodridge, r. f.

Jenney, p.; Slade, c.; Brown, 1b.; Thompson, 2b.; Litchfield, Prescott, 3b.; Galbraith, Mills, ss.; Jewell, Hooper, l. f., Manning, c. f.; Sterling, r. f.

The practice diamond in the old secret practice field has been moved out 50 feet farther from the fence and a temporary back-stop erected.
