THE UNIVERSITY CREWS.

The University crews took a rather hard row yesterday to the Union Boat Club and back. Ayer has been laid off on account of a cold, and his place at seven in the first boat was taken by Bancroft. Colby was put in Bancroft's place at seven in the second crew, and Gregg rowed at five.

In several long stretches down-stream, the first crew gained slowly. At the Union Boat Club a radical change was made. Brownell was put in Foster's place at stroke in the first crew, and Foster was moved to stroke in the second. On the way home, the second crew seemed to hold the first in the long stretches, but in the spurts it fell behind, owing to Foster's inability to put the stroke up quickly.

The crews rowed in the following orders:

First--Stroke, Foster and Brownell; 7, Bancroft; 6, Shuebruk; 5, Francis; 4, Swift; 3, McGrew; 2, Bullard; bow, James; cox., Ivy.

Second--Stroke, Brownell and Foster; 7, Colby; 6, Smith; 5, Gregg; 4, Derby; 3, Covel; 2, Phillips; bow, Hartwell; cox., Otis.
