TRIAL ROW YESTERDAY

University Eights Sent Over Regular Course.--Orders of the Crews.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The three University crews were given a trial row yesterday over the regular course, starting at the railroad bridge and finishing at the Union Boat Club. The third crew had a start of five lengths and the second a start of two lengths. The first crew gained steadily and overtook the second at Harvard Bridge, where the third led by about a length. A quarter of a mile below the bridge the first crew overtook the third, with the second half a length behind. From this point the first crew lacked power and a strong drive and hurried the recover. The positions of the boats remained practically unchanged to the finish, the third crew crossing the line a few feet ahead of the first, which was in turn about half a length ahead of the second. All three crews rowed about twenty-eight strokes to the minute.

During the past few days the crews have improved to some extent in applying power to the stroke more quickly and in pulling the stroke more quickly and in pulling the stroke through to the finish more strongly. Bad faults, however, still remain in slowness at the beginning of the shoot and hurrying of the last part of the recover.

Several changes have been made in the orders: Captain Dillingham is back at bow in the first, Swaim going to 3 in place of Flint, who has taken Meier's position in the second. Montgomery has been moved from 6 in the third to 3 in the second, his place in the third being taken by Johnson; Lindsley in the third has been moved from 2 to 6.

The crews rowed yesterday as follows:

First crew--Stroke, Filley; 7, Duffy; 6, Smith; 5, Lawson; 4, Shuebruk; 3, Swaim; 2, Ober; bow, Dillingham; cox., Green.

Second crew--Stroke, Brownell; 7, Bowditch; 6, Pleasanton; 5, Flint; 4, Foster; 3, Montgomery; 2, Shepard; bow, White; cox., Swan.

Third crew--Stroke, Macomber; 7, Johnson; 6, Lindsley; 5, Gill; 4, Richmond; 3, Gardiner; 2, Switzer; bow, Durfee; cox., Chase.
