FIRE IN THAYER YESTERDAY

All Rooms in North Entry Burned Out Damage Estimated at $10,000.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Shortly after 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon fire broke out on the first floor of the north entry of Thayer Hall, and before it was finally placed under control an hour later had rendered unfit for occupancy every suite in the entry, including rooms 45 to 68, and had charred the connecting hallways and stairs. The fire, the cause of which is unknown, spread so rapidly to the top of the building that several men who were in their rooms at the time were forced to leave by ladders or rope fire escapes. The thick connecting brick wall prevented the fire from extending to the middle entry.

The loss to the University amounts to about $5,000, and is covered by insurance; that to the occupants of the rooms, whose possessions were not insured is probably about the same amount. Repairs, consisting of a complete refitting of the interior, will begin at once and it will probably be at least a month before the rooms will again be ready for occupancy. Meanwhile the Bursar has made arrangements for the accommodation of all the men whose rooms were destroyed.

The destroyed rooms were occupied by the following men: 45--S. E. Brown '07, C. Benton '07; 46--H. L. Murphy '08, R. D. Murphy '08; 47--E. L. Thompson '08, P. R. Ammadon '08; 48--G. A.
