Mr. Frederick Moore gave a lecture on "Brigand Life in the Balkans" last night in the Union, illustrated by stereopticon views from photographs taken during the Revolution of 1903.
Starting at Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, Mr. Moore travelled to the Turkish border, and penetrated into Macedonia under a government guard. Here he came across those bands of robbers who make a business of plundering and smuggling, dividing the spoils with the Turkish custom house officials.
All through this district, towns were being destroyed by the Turks in their effort to subdue the Christian uprising. Daily from Monastir bands of soldiers would march, carrying cans of petroleum with which to set fire to the insurgent villages. In Krushove the suffering was intense. Here 24 Bulgarians had for a time made a stand against 7,000 Turks, till at last they were shot down, and the town sacked.
