Obituary

Major J. J. Higginson '57 died of pneumonia at his home in New York on Thursday. Major Higginson was a member of the banking firm of Chase & Higginson and an original member of the New York Stock Exchange.

Shortly after being graduated from Harvard, Mr. Higginson went to Europe where he remained until 1862, engaged in the study of law. In 1863 he obtained a commission as a second lieutenant in the First Massachusetts Cavalry with which he served until the end of the war, rising in rank to brevet-major. For a period of nine months he was a prisoner at Libby prison.

After the war, Major Higginson began his financial career as a stock broker, in which business he continued until 1892. He was president of the Harvard Club of New York.
