The Weld rowing committee at its last meeting decided to continue the present graded crew system. The squad is divided into two clubs, the crews of each club racing the corresponding crews in the other club. At present, there are five crews working under Coach Brown. It is hoped that material for three more crews will report in order that the system may accomplish its aims; namely, to furnish men above the Freshman class with an opportunity to learn how to row under a competent coach, and to develop men to fill the places on the Varsity crews when the general call for candidates is made in February.
The graded crew races will be rowed in the Charles River Basin on Tuesday, November 4, or on the first day thereafter on which weather conditions permit. The Filley cup will be presented to the club whose crews make the best showing, and individual prizes will be given the members of the winning crews.
The clubs have been named the Eliot and Thayer Clubs in honor of President Emeritus Eliot; who has always taken a great interest in rowing, and the late F. W. Thayer, who worked faithfully for the advancement of Harvard athletics. F. S. Kingsbury '14 will captain the first crew of the Eliot and G. T. Winslow '14, the first crew of the Thayer Club.
