Figures based on the first day's registration at Yale University, which opened Thursday, show a loss of approximately 1300 students in the different departments, all of which, except the Medical School, suffered heavily.

These early figures show an enrolment of only 2000 men as compared with 3300 in the university last year. Although the next few days may bring the number somewhat higher, the loss will never-the-less be large. In this falling-off, the college has suffered especially, having only some 800 students as compared with 1502 last year. These are divided as follows: Senior class, 100; Junior class, 175; Sophomore class, 250; and Freshman class, 300.

This loss of 1300 men is due mostly to the direct influence of the war, which has called them into service. The secretary's office has on file the records of 832 Yale students, exclusive of those who graduated last year, who are at present in some branch of service for the Government. Later records will probably show that this number has reached 1000, and thus fully explain the present loss in enrolment.
