The collection of Portuguese books in the Widener Library has been greatly strengthened by a gift from Mr. John B. Stetson Jr. '06, of Elkins Park, Pa., of a large library of Portuguese volumes.

While the books presented by Mr. Stetson include few great rarities, they are said by library authorities to serve as a foundation for a good Portuguese library in both history and literature, and to include also books on economics and sociology. Mr. Stetson has made previous similar gifts to the University, and with his aid it is hoped to develop a noteworthy collection representing the literature and history not only of Portugal itself, but also of Brazil.

The books are given in memory of Mr. Stetson's grandfather, the Count of Santa Eulalia, a Portuguese nobleman, and a special bookplate has been designed for them by Pierre La Rose of Cambridge and engraved by A. J. Downey of London.
