FRESHMEN SHOW RECORD ATHLETIC PARTICIPATION

Have 712 Men Engaged in Spring Sports as Compared to 680 Signed Up Last Year--Tennis Is Favorite

According to statistics compiled by the Department of Physical Education 712 Freshmen are participating in spring athletics this season. This number exceeds that of last year by only 32 men, but the percentage of participation this year is greater than that of last because of the larger number of men in last year's Freshman class.

Nearly 400 of these men are out for some athletic team, which roughly shows the number of students who take part in athletics for pleasure rather than to fulfil the physical training requirement.

Tennis is again--the most popular sport, its adherents numbering 217: rowing, however, is a close second with '198.

The following table shows the number of men participating in each sport this year as compared with the spring season of 1922:   1926  1925 Tennis  217  189 Rowing  198  186 Track  86  96 Baseball  61  53 Equitation  29  33 Swimming  29  56 Squash  8  0 Lacrosse  18  7 Handball  17  25 Corrective Exercise  17  3 Golf  11  -- Soccer  8  -- Fencing  8  2
