RIFLE MEN MAY BE FORCED TO LEAVE SMITH HALL RANGE

Smoke and Riddled Furnace Pipes Are Charged Agains Sharpshooters

George Jackson, janitor of Smith Hall, has received so many complaints from students who object to the noise and smoke, and from officials who object to riddled furnace pipes, that the University rifle team may be forced to give up its present range under Persis Smith Hall next year, according to an announcement by Manager R. P. Cromwell '25. The complaints are an annual occurrence but it looks this year as if they would result in closing the range.

The Smith Hall range has been used by University and Freshman teams over since the war. It was originally installed by the government for the use of the platoons formed in the Freshman dormitory.

Manager Cromwell said last night that it would be impossible to carry on an intercollegiate league schedule, using the range of a Boston Rifle Club, on account of the difficulty of getting the men to shoot twice a week and of storing the rifles. So far no other possible alternative has been thought of but every effort is still being made to secure a range in Cambridge.
