It is gratifying to learn that Vassar considers Harvard the cradle of liberalism: in fact it is gratifying to learn that Vassar considers Harvard at all. But the young ladies at Poughkeepsie, in a commotion as to the efficacy of their present smoking rules, have inquired at Harvard, among other places, for its regulations on the subject and the young ladies have been answered. "No student shall keep a dog in a college building"; nothing whatsoever is said about smoking, for the very good reason that there was nothing to be said. Harvard may or may not be the home of the brave, but there can be no doubt that it is the land of the free.
Yes--there are no dogs. There are pipes cigarettes, there are even cigars, but there are no dogs. Vassar's query has been answered with a terse dirootness. Never any more can she look upon Harvard as one who has not seen the light. Harvard has been asked another and Harvard has answered--another.
