CHOPPY WATER AND HEAD WINDS HINDER CREWS IN WORKOUT

Is Back in Original Seat After Two-day Lapse--Second 150-lb. Crew Trails 1933 Boat

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Rowing in the wake of the late afternoon river traffic, the two University 150-pound boats and the Sophomore class eight raced over the upstream mile course yesterday. Plans for putting the crews through their paces over the Henley distance were thwarted by a head wind which ruffled the basin and defied smooth blade-work.

In spite of the poor conditions under which the race was run off, the first boat, stroked by Donough Prince '31, showed good timing and a powerful beat. Defeating the seconds and the Sophomore shell by well over a length, it continued on through the Weeks Memorial Bridge, and finally stopped after 6 minutes, 22 seconds of rowing time.

Second 150's Beat 1933

Forced by the wakes of the launches to call a halt at the three-quarter mile mark, the second featherweight shell was led over the finish-line by the 1933 craft with a margin of half a length. Both crews had suffered considerably from the rough water. The lighter boat, rowing in the outer lane, was restricted to a beat of 31, in which it seemed to do its best spacing.

Returning to his original seat in the first University shell, Robert Salton-stall '33 was again seen rowing behind Cassedy yesterday, after a two-day lapse in which W. L. Thompson '32 occupied the number seven position. His absence from the stern combination which has seen two seasons of rowing has been difficult to understand, while his contribution to the power and spirit of the University eight has been felt during his short sojourn on the third boat.
